REVOLUTIONISING OUR FUTURE. ONE STUDENT, ONE POLICY AT A TIME .
As indicated in the Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to education where it contributes to the full development of the human personality and to the reinforcement of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Despite this, education remains as one of the most prevalent human rights issues with millions of children and young people out of school as of today, along with many divides that promote inequalities among individuals.
For instance, quality education is out of reach in many regions where the majority do not have the capability to acquire schooling due to poverty, family-related issues, geographical constraints, armed conflicts and lack of resources and opportunities.
Especially with the pandemic outbreak as well as the arising violence and conflicts around the world, education just seems to be getting further out of reach. However, there is little to no action taken, that is by governments and authorities in the context of making institutional changes and humanitarian aid.
How education has been impacted by COVID-19: the numbers
Governments mainly used online platforms to deliver education while schools remained closed, (the method was used by 83% of countries. However, this only reached around a quarter of schoolchildren worldwide.
From a sample of 5.4 million students in the US from grades 3-8, in fall 2021, average maths test scores were around 0.2 to 0.27 standard deviations lower than their peers two years prior; reading test scores were 0.09 to 0.18 SDs lower.
Children from low-income households, children with disabilities, and girls were less likely to access remote learning due to limited availability of electricity, connectivity and devices as well as discrimination and social/gender norms.
The impact on education tended to be worse for students of lower socioeconomic status in various countries, including Ghana, Mexico, and Pakistan. The gendered impact of school closures on learning is still emerging, but evidence points to larger learning losses among girls, including in South Africa and Mexico.
